Australian policemen saved the whale from death by suffocation. The animal swam in the coastal waters of Sydney with a fishing net and buoys tangled around its head.
Australian maritime police released a young humpback whale on Sunday night, which became tangled in fishing lines and buoys off the coast of Sydney.
Police sent a search helicopter out into the waters near Bondi Beach shortly after a marine conservation organization informed them of a whale in distress.
"The whale had a fishing net wrapped around its head with several buoys," Chief Police Officer Brad Monk said on Monday. "It was swimming in the area where the fish were caught," he added.
He went back to deep water
Humpback whales can be found in Australian waters from June to November. It is the time of their pairing and reproduction. Then they return to cold Antarctica.
Monk said the rescued humpback whale was about a year old and was later seen in deeper water.
“The whale was actually very friendly. He slowed down so the police could help him. It was as if he knew about our good intentions,” he said.
The Marine Area Command (MAC) says most of the line has been removed from the animal's body, but the services still intend to track the whale.
