UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Thursday said he believed that the achievement of a ceasefire in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict should be used to try to revive the Middle East peace process. He called on both parties to abide by the agreement obtained. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, made a similar appeal.

Hamas and Israel reported a ceasefire on Thursday night. The Israeli authorities informed that the truce was proposed by the Egyptian side. Egyptian President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi has decided to send two security delegations to Israel and the Palestinian territories to work on maintaining the ceasefire, Reuters reported.

“I believe that reaching a ceasefire agreement is very important. But it is equally important to develop a stable program to deliver humanitarian aid and reconstruction to Gaza, and to revitalize the peace process aimed at the coexistence of two states,” said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

He called on all parties to the conflict to abide by the provisions of the agreement and expressed his sympathy to the families of the killed.

"I welcome the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which entered into force today at 2 a.m. I call on both sides to consolidate it and to stabilize long-term. Only a political solution will bring lasting peace and security to all," wrote the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on Twitter.

On the night of Thursday-Friday, a ceasefire between Israel and the organization Hamas which is ruling the Gaza Strip entered into force. In the last episode of the conflict, which lasted on May 10, Hamas carried out a missile attack on Israel, while its forces bombarded the Palestinian enclave. The escalation of violence was preceded by violent clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and the Israeli police in Jerusalem. The clashes were caused by plans to expand Israeli settlements in occupied East Jerusalem.

According to the authorities of the Gaza Strip, at least 232 people died during this conflict, including 65 children, and more than 1.9 thousand people were injured. Israel reported 12 victims, including two children and hundreds of wounded. “Most of those killed in the Gaza Strip are fighters of terrorist organizations, including Hamas,” the Israeli army said. It added that more than 4,000 rockets were launched from Gaza towards this country, 90% of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defence system.
