More residents are evacuated from New Zealand's flooded Canterbury region. “I went to bed around ten o'clock yesterday and there was no trace of water. Today I got up at six, and I saw a river outside the window,” they said.
Hundreds of people were evacuated overnight. The reason was a huge flood - a consequence of the heavy rain that has been haunting the Canterbury region in New Zealand for several days. The heavy rainfall continues, so many residents still have to prepare for a possible evacuation.
“I went to bed around ten o'clock yesterday and there was no trace of water. Today I got up at six and saw a river outside the window. Half of my farm is under water,” said one of the inhabitants of the region.
"Once in a hundred years"
During the night, the inhabitants of at least 300 Canterbury houses hurried away. As they said, "such a flood occurs once in a hundred years." The rivers surged and overflowed and began to flood Canterbury.
Schools and offices in the region have been closed, and main communication routes have also been closed. New Zealand Defence Forces deployed helicopters to rescue people stranded in floods in the Ashburton area.
Heavy alerts in and around Canterbury have been in force since Sunday.
