Months of mounting tensions and fruitless negotiations have finally led to what many neighbouring European countries had feared – Russia has declared war and launched a full-scale invasion on Ukraine in a bid to ‘demilitarise’ the country.
Missile strikes and resounding explosions had been reported all across Ukraine when Russia mounted an overnight offensive on their neighbouring country, mirroring its annexation of the Ukraine’s Crimea region 8 years ago.
“Innumerable missiles and bombs have been raining down on an entirely innocent population,” said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. “A vast invasion is underway by land, by sea and by air.”
The promised sanctions threatened by many countries against Russia are now being delivered on, as the building Russian forces of over 150,000 soldiers had finally made their move on the smaller country, sparking war in the continent.
Gostomel air base in Kiev was seized by swarming Russian attack helicopters by midday on Thursday. Ukrainian ground forces had attempted a counter-assault, with reports indicating that at least four Russian helicopters had been shot down in the attempt.
According to one Ukrainian official, hundreds had been killed in the early stages of the fighting, though no accurate estimations could be given as fighting is supposedly occurring across the entire country.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated, on Thursday morning in an address to the entire nation, that the whole of Ukrainian history has been changed forever due to the invasion. He comparing the invading Russian forces to those of Germany during World War 2, stating that the country has “embarked on a path of evil.”
He had added that guns will be issued to any Ukrainian who wants one for the war against the invading Russians, and has also asked all countries to “impose the harshest sanctions possible” on Russia in retaliation.
