Abubakar Shekau, leader of the Nigerian jihadist group Boko Haram, is dead, the so-called ISIS of the West African Province reported in an audio recording. The video was acquired by a Reuters agency.

Abubakar Shekau was said to have died around May 18 after detonating an explosive while he was chased by ISWAP fighters, said Abu Musab al-Barnai who claimed to be its leader.

Two people familiar with al-Barnawi told Reuters that the voice on the video belongs to the ISWAP leader.

Over the past 12 years, there have been several reports of Shekau's death that have turned out to be untrue. The recording is to prove that this time the information is true.

Since 2009, when Shekau headed Boko Haram, Nigeria has been shaken by the terrorist activities of this jihadist organization, which has already resulted in the deaths of over 36,000 people. Over two million people have been forced to leave their homes.

In 2016, the organization split. ISWAP emerged from its structures.
