Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, after a teleconference with Latvian and Estonian leaders ahead of the upcoming summit of the North Atlantic Alliance, stated that Russia remains the main threat not only for the Baltic region, but also for the entire NATO. “We are witnessing unprecedented security incidents and provocations on NATO's eastern borders,” emphasized Nauseda.

“In the long run, Russia remains the main threat not only to the Baltic region, but also to the entire Alliance,” said Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, quoted in the statement issued by the Lithuanian President's office after Wednesday's conference call. According to him, the actions of "unpredictable and hostile neighbours can only be counteracted by strengthening military and civilian capabilities and investing in NATO defence."

"We are witnessing unprecedented incidents"

After Wednesday's talks with Latvian President Egils Levits and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas ahead of the upcoming NATO summit - to be held in Brussels on June 14 - Nauseda said the assessment of threats to the Baltic leaders "is completely the same." He pointed out that "NATO's tasks regarding collective defence and deterrence should be effectively carried out."

“This is especially important now, when we are witnessing unprecedented security incidents and provocations on NATO's eastern borders,” emphasized the President of Lithuania.

Speaking about the implementation of the NATO strategic concept until 2030, "the leaders of the Baltic states emphasized the importance of NATO's continuous adaptation to changing global threats and challenges, in which allies acting together are able to ensure the security of the entire Euro-Atlantic area," stated in the release.

"Russia is systematically involved in illegal operations on NATO territory"

The prime ministers of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia - Ingrida Szimonyte, Kriszjanis Karinsz and Kaja Kallas - also highlighted Russia's threats to Euro-Atlantic security ahead of the upcoming NATO summit in a joint statement released on Monday.

"Russia aims to destabilize the Alliance and undermine the security of NATO allies and partners," stated the heads of governments. They stressed that "Russia's military stance, its conventional and nuclear capabilities pose a threat to Euro-Atlantic security."

“Russia is also systematically involved in illegal operations on NATO territory, engaging in malicious and dangerous cyber activities, spreading disinformation, interfering in elections and taking advantage of the split in democratic societies,” assessed the prime ministers of the Baltic states.
