Iran and Syria’s Military Cooperation Agreement
Iran and Syria signed a deal for military cooperation on Sunday, during an assembly between the defence ministers of the two countries; Iranian Defence Minister Amir Hatami, and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while in Damascus, as reported on Monday by the Tasnim news agency.
The two-day visit reportedly went well, with the two signing a deal that Tasnim has not yet provided any details about, but was predicted to have gone smoothly, with Iranian forces having backed Asaad in the country’s civil war for some time now.
It has been stated by senior Iranian officials that their military presence in Syria is at the invitation of the Assad government and they have no immediate plans to withdraw, despite U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton’s statement last week: that Iran ought to remove its forces from Syria.
