Samoan PM’s Speech on Climate Change

“Any leader of those countries who believes that there is no climate change I think he ought to be taken to mental confinement, he is utterly stupid and I say the same thing for any leader here who says there is no climate change,” stated the Samoan PM Tuilaepa Sailele on Thursday whilst on a visit to Sydney, in the process singling out countries such as the US, China, Australia and India that did not treat the matter with much seriousness.

Claiming that any world leaders who do not believe in climate change ought to be hospitalised for poor mental health may seem a bit radical, but its cannot be denied that climate change is a problem ignored by many world leaders, a problem that really ought not to be ignored. In this sense, the Samoan PM goes on to refer to climate change as an “existential threat ... for all our Pacific family.”

Sailele, delivering his speech with passion and aggressive self-justice, had also expressed his belief that the US, China and India were the “three countries that are responsible for all this disaster,” sparing almost none of his reservations and directly addressing what he believes to be the issue.

Sailele’s speech had been made with the premonition of the leaders of the Pacific nations currently preparing to gather and meet at the Pacific Islands Forum in Nauru next week, at which point Australia will be expected to answer several questions regarding its emission targets.

With this in mind, the Samoan PM took to undisguised criticism of Australia’s obligation to diminishing the impacts brought along by climate change, which he referred to as the “single greatest threat to the livelihood, security and wellbeing peoples of the Pacific”.

“While climate change may be considered a slow onset threat by some in our region, its adverse impacts are already felt by our Pacific Islands peoples and communities,” continued Sailele; “Greater ambition is necessary to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees centigrade and Pacific Island countries continue to urge faster action by all countries.”

Much to the dismay of many; Australia’s new prime minister, Scott Morrison, is under some pressure from unnamed members of his party to completely abandon Australia’s targets and promises to reducing overall emissions under the Paris agreement. The Paris agreement had already been completely abandoned by the US in the pre-last year of 2016, leading to defiance from many other countries as well, but as of yet, no others have abandoned the agreement.
