Germany breaks Yemen-ban promise by accepting weapon sale to Saudi Arabia

According to a government document revealed on Wednesday, a delivery of weaponry to Saudi Arabia has been approved by Germany. This, despite the statement that it would halt all weapon transports to countries involved in the current war in Yemen.

During Yemen’s war back in 2015, a Saudi Arabia led coalition had gotten involved in the war to help restore the country’s government, one opposed by the rebellious Houthi group. Hence Saudi Arabi’s participation in the war, and the reason for which they too would technically have had to have been involved in the ban.

According to Economy Minister Peter Altmaier, who had written in a letter to lawmakers; the weaponry in particular was identified as four artillery positioning systems, which allowed vehicular transport, and may be used to trace enemy fire so that a counter-attack or plan of action may be better formed.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s coalition had agreed to the Yemen-related ban back in March, and since then the contract had held steadfast, up until now. For Germany, with its history in previous wars, this is a delicate topic overall.
