London – Hundreds upon thousands protest Brexit, demand another referendum

In the biggest demonstration had so far, this Saturday, hundreds upon thousands of London citizens and strong antagonists to Brexit had taken to the streets, demanding that another referendum be held by the government, after Prime Minister Theresa May had failed yet again to secure a parting deal with the EU during the Brussels meeting.

The demonstration had a large turnout, which was built on gradually, with the EU’s gold and blue coloured flags being flashed around, and anti-Brexit slogans chanted repetitively. With no deal so far, and only five months remaining until the UK leaves the Union, many are concerned for the future state of the country, and how the change will impact their lives.

“People think the Brexit negotiations are a total mess,” said James McGrory; one of the organisers of the march, “they have no faith in the government to deliver the promises that were made, partly because they cannot be delivered,” and adding on that people ought to have the right to change their minds.

A 39-year-old IT worker, by the name of Brendan Heading, brought up his concerns that the UK leaving the EU without any sorts of parting deal would severely hurt the British economy, “I feel that Brexit threatens prosperity and stability,” he said. “People should have the opportunity to vote for an alternative based on what we now know.”

670,000 people had gotten involved in the march, according to the organisers, with many demonstrators having carried signs that read “Bollocks to Brexit”, “Time for an EU turn” and “European and proud”, in what is apparently the largest British demonstration since 2003, where demonstration united against the Iraq war. No estimated numbers were given by the local police.

Over 2000 people had also gathered in a similar anti-Brexit demonstration in Northern Ireland, Belfast specifically, on Saturday. Even throughout all this protest, the prime minister has, on multiple occasions, ruled out the possibilities of holding a second referendum. 2016s votes had rounded at 52% voting to leave, and 48% voting to stay, and since opinion poles had been taken since then, they’ve revealed a slight change in opinion since then, with more positivity towards staying, but nothing decisive as of yet.

There have been those who rose in oppositions, however, with pro-Brexit demonstrations having been held in the north of England, in the town of Harrogate, where one of the primary speakers, and Vice-Chairman of Leave Means Leave; Richard Tice said “We had a vote, we voted to leave, the idea to have a second referendum would be incredibly damaging.”

He expressed his beliefs that a second referendum would prompt a constitutional crisis, describing the London demonstrators as “losers”, and adding that “People need to be under no illusions as to how people feel about what is a significant potential for a total betrayal of democracy in this country.”
