Yemen Peace Talks Moved Back by United Nation

According to a United Nations spokesman on Thursday, the new aim to have Yemen’s warring parties assemble for peace talks have been moved from the end of this month, to rather the end of this year, by the UN Yemen envoy Martin Griffiths, after the talks had initially failed in September.

The peace talk attempts back in September were meant to be had in Geneva, but after the Houthi delegation failed to show after three days of a long wait, the peace talks were abandoned, with immediate efforts to try and start them up again.

According to the Houthis themselves, their refusal to show was based around their trepidation, demanding that the plane helps to evacuate a few of their wounded to Europe, as well as a UN guarantee that their plane would not end up having to stop for a Saudi-led coalition inspection in Djibouti.

It was said last week by Griffiths that he had high hopes for getting the talks started by the end of the month, nut it seems that complications have ensued. The Security Council is due to be given a briefing by Griffiths on November the 16th in regard to the situation. Farhan Haq; a UN spokesman, was the one who’d made the statement about moving the peace talks back to the end of the year.

Haq himself commented, saying to the reporters; “There’s always different challenges to bringing the parties together. What we’re trying to do is clear up any issues so that we can get a successful round of talks as soon as possible.”

Back in 2015, Saudi Arabia had intervened in Yemen by backing the government forces that had been (and still are) battling the Houthi rebels. Suspicions have been strong that Iran have been supplying the rebels with weaponry, despite their denials of the accusation. As such, a sort of proxy war is occurring within Yemen between the two countries.

Saudi Arabia are under quite a lot of strain in particular, with the recent acclaimed murder of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul back in October the 2nd. The pressure comes mainly from last week’s occurrence of both the United States and Britain claiming they’re ready to put an end to the four-year war that’s ravaged Yemen and brought it into such a sorry state.

Britain is said to soon start working hand-in-hand with the United States to try and put an end to the war in Yemen, according to UN diplomats. Similar statements have been made by Jeremy Hunt, the British foreign minister, who believes he can push for the UN Security Council to take new, and more preferable actions.
