Heightening Tensions Between Russia and Ukraine

Security in Ukraine has been stepped up at nuclear power stations and Black Sea ports -essentially sites of vital infrastructure-, according to the country’s President Petro Poroshenko, as a move of patience against the aggravating Russians.

Back on the 25th of November, Russia had attacked once again, having opened fire upon, and successfully seizing 3 of the Ukrainian Navy’s ships, along with the entirety of their crews. Much debate went on, between the countries, with Moscow and Kiev having blamed one another for the incident.

Poroshenko himself stated on Twitter, that; “(Russia) has deployed land forces of around 80,000 Russian troops, about 1,400 artillery and missile systems, 900 tanks, 2,300 armoured vehicles, about 500 planes and 300 helicopters,” with the fear of conflicts starting up once again.

Russia are in fact known by this point for their frequent movements against Ukraine, having struck again back in 2014, successfully having annexed many places in the country’s East, along with Crimea. Some parts of Eastern Ukraine are since then under the rule of the Pro-Russians separatists, in fact, only adding to the negative relations and high tensions.

The Twitter accusations refer to the large Russian military force recently amassed in Eastern Ukraine, thought to also be controlled by the separatists. Along with this, the President further claimed that Moscow had amassed a large naval force of sorts in the Sea of Azov, and Black Sea.

Yet It’s also been cited by a Russian State TASS News Agency recently, apparently quoting the Pro-Russian Separatists, that the Ukrainians are convening their own military forces as well, on Saturday. Martial law has been imposed in certain parts of Ukraine, with the tightening tensions, and Poroshenko went on to state that military forces will be going over training for mobilising.

Referring back to the confrontation between the two navy powers, many Russian politicians and important figures believe that the military phase of the encounter is over, and now only debates can be held, and hopefully talks of calming the issues. The Russian President himself; Vladimir Putin, had a fairly dismissive attitudes towards the occurrence, claiming it was nothing more than a border incident.

According to Moscow, the attack had occurred when the Ukrainian Navy ships crossed the Kerch Strait between Russian-annexed Crimea and southern Russia, without having given any notice prior. Despite sending warning, the ships didn’t respond, and were hence fired upon. Kiev responded by claiming their Navy should not have to ask for permission to cross the strait, into Russian waters.
