Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh Has Yet to be Removed

The government of Iran does not at all intend to remove Bijan Zanganeh; the country’s Oil Minister, from his post despite recent events. This is according to a spokesman from the government on Sunday, learned from the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA).
It was said last month by senior Iranian lawmaker Hedayatollah Khademi that he was securing various signatures in parliament in order to support a motion that would oust Zanganeh. This movement was put forth due to Zanganeh’s previous inability to counter the United States sanctions on Iran’s oil sales.
Spokesman Ali Rabiei said that “There is no change in the government’s work programme. Zanganeh has always been active and is one of the key ministers of the government. Zanganeh’s name has always been mentioned for impeachment but I hope Zanganeh continues his role in the government. Zanganeh’s role at this time is important and parliamentarians have to help.”
Last month, Khademi stated that he still needed to gather enough signatures to move the motion forward and have Zanganeh removed. This attempt was not the first, and it may not yet be the last; similar attempts against Zanganeh have failed in recent years.
Sanctions on exports of Iranian oil were reintroduced by the United States in November, after the US pulled out of the 2015 accord between Iran and six world powers as a means to curb Tehran’s nuclear programme, on the demands of US President Donald Trump.
