UK Labour Party Speaks of Going Green
Labour is said to be preparing to back measures that will contribute to the deterring of investment in fossil fuels, as a method of putting a halt to the financial backing of global warming that’s become engrained in the financial sector.
In Labour’s latest attempts at greener self-representation, it was told that the shadow chancellor would be having a speech in the City, on Monday, regarding committing to using the “full might of the Treasury” put in their contributions. This is thought of as an effort to commit the party to forcing the private sector into investing in the “green industrial revolution”.
It was further noted that the shadow chancellor would announce a review of the financial sector’s role in the perpetuation of the climate crisis, specifically investigating “where and how it is causing or exacerbating problems”, as well as discussing certain measures that would end up preventing financial institutions from “actively contributing to planetary heating or exposing our economy to financial instability”.
John McDonnell, who has invited the environmental activist group Extinction Rebellion to brief his team, would also have himself promise to “marshal the resources and levers of power available to the Treasury to fund and drive the climate change emergency programme”, under a force of Labour government of course.
It is thought of as the latest implication that Labour is acting in response to the threat of the increasing successes and supports for the Green party: having earned somewhere over two million votes at last month’s European elections, only around 300,000 votes behind Jeremy Corbyn’s party.
However, while Labour has refocused its effort on serving to help resolve green issues, there is no guarantee that it would win the upcoming election – less so be chosen over the green party if it is to represent similar if milder global-concern values. Labour has agreed to commit to the goal of reducing carbon emissions to net zero by at least the year 2050, with McDonnell stating that the party seeks to help achieve said target as one of its priorities.
More than 15,000 people are expected in London’s Westminster to lobby for urgent action on the climate at a rally on Wednesday the 26th of June. The event is presently being referred to as the ‘Time is Now’, and is anticipated to be the largest ever environmental lobby of parliament – prepared to include a diverse range of people, from school children to workers, as well as nuns and priests.
McDonnell is prepared to use Monday’s speech to suggest he will instil certain measures to help the cause of climate change, including battling particularly harmful technologies. “Every one of Labour’s shadow ministerial teams has been charged with producing a programme of action defining their department’s contribution to tackling climate change,” he stated. “With the real prospect of an autumn election, we want to be fully prepared to roll out this climate change emergency programme as soon as we take over the controls of government. State and private sector resources will be required to invest in the infrastructure of the green industrial revolution envisaged by Labour. This includes the large-scale development of alternative energy sources and a carbon neutral transport system. Regulation as well as incentives will also be required to divert investment away from fossil fuels and into environmentally sustainable activities.”
Monday’s was the first in what’s expected to be a series of speeches made by the shadow chancellor. The party is thought to be desperate at the moment, scrambling to ensure that its uncertain and mixed position on Brexit does not completely annihilate its chances of securing office.
