Two American soldiers are dead. They took part in a mission against Jihadists

Two members of the US forces were killed during an operation against the so-called Islamic State in Iraq, the US army said on Monday. The US stated that "enemy forces" were responsible for the deaths of the soldiers.

The Americans who accompanied the Iraqi military mission died on Sunday. According to the statement by the US Central Command, responsible for the actions of American troops in the Middle East, and to the Pentagon policy, the names of the soldiers will be made public only after first notifying the soldiers’ relatives. The message does not specify other details of the event.

5,200 American soldiers are currently serving in Iraq.

According to the Reuters agency, the deaths of the American soldiers indicates that despite territorial losses in Iraq and Syria, jihadists from the so-called Islamic states are still a real threat.

A report from the General Inspector of the Defence Department, published earlier this year, noted that despite the death of the founder and longtime leader of the “IS”, Abu Bakr al-Bagdadi, in October 2019, the organization has not ceased operations and continues to carry out attacks. As noted, although the “IS” is not growing in strength, "it has not lost its ability to move, as well as to hide and transport its fighters and supplies on the desert and mountainous territory of Iraq."

"IS in Iraq still has sufficient human resources and planning capacity to conduct regular small-scale attacks. Sometimes they manage to get to city centers, but do not strive to maintain territory," said the Pentagon General Inspector in his report.
