India was hit by another cyclone - Nisarga. Over 100,000 people were evacuated, including about 1,000 patients with suspected SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection from a field hospital.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that Cyclone Nisarga has reached the west coast of India, 75 kilometers south of Mumbai, on Wednesday around 1 pm local time.

On land, the wind reached gusts up to 120 kilometers per hour. In the Raigad district, the wind was tearing out trees and overturning electricity poles and roofs. There is no information about victims.

“The Hindu” daily newspaper reports that authorities have stopped traffic at the Mumbai airport until 7 pm local time, when the transport plane left the runway when landing in difficult weather conditions.

Earlier, over 100,000 people were evacuated from the coast. The state authorities of Maharashtra, whose capital is Mumbai, evacuated 60,000 people, including 10,000 residents of the lower districts of the city. Another 50 thousand people were evacuated in Gujarat. Both districts are at the forefront of COVID-19, a disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection.

Among those evacuated on Tuesday, there were about a thousand patients with suspected coronavirus infections from a special field hospital at the Bandra Kurla complex in Mumbai. They were transferred to other hospitals.

India is one of the ten countries around the world with the largest number of confirmed SARS-CoV-2 cases. There were over 165,000 infections, and about 55,000 in Mumbai alone.

Nisarga cyclone route forecast (JTWC)

The Indian crisis staff feared a great damage and flooding in Mumbai. Frequent flooding occurs over there during the monsoon, resulting in many casualties. However, the cyclone shifts to the northeast, bypassing the second most populated agglomeration and the financial capital of New Delhi. Mumbai has over 12 million inhabitants, and the entire agglomeration over 20 million.

The Cyclone Nisarga was formed over the western part of the Indian Ocean. It appeared in India less than two weeks after the Amphan supercyclone, which devastated the east coast of India and the south of Bangladesh.
